Pokémon TCG: Art-Rares Tell a Story
Scarlet and Violet is breaking ground on all new ways to portray Pokémon cards. We have ditched rainbows in favor of hyper-rares (art-rares). Borders, symbols, and foil patterns have all been reimagined for the benefit of us collectors and trainers. The full set list for our premier Scarlet and Violet cards has been revealed and with it, the awe inspiring artwork of the hyper rare art cards. The artists have made a shift towards storytelling over simple shine and sparkle. I’ll show you some breathtaking examples.
The best stories are told over time and what better canvas than the evolution chain of a single Pokémon? Each of the starters as well as the Gardevoir line present an incredible opportunity and the Pokémon Company pounced on it.
The Gardevior line introduces you to a young family getting started in a brand new home. The couple is young and so is the opportunity. The young Ralts plays cheerfully on the couch while the trainers set up their future. As Ralts Evolves to Kirlia the young couple introduces a child into their family. Toys litter the floor and life is becoming beautiful and chaotic. Finally Gardevoir is helping the woman with her knitting. The young couple is no longer in their prime. They relax in the family room enjoying their golden years with the family they built over the many years.
Another example of artwork storytelling is the Quaquaval ex illustrations by Souichirou Gunjima. We start with a young joyous Quaxly goofing off in the mirror and enjoying his bright fluffy hair. Quaxwell is older and more concerned about his looks. He is in his angsty teen years taking care of his charming hairdo. Finally Quaquaval has grown into himself and is a more mature version of himself. There is an internal journey of maturity all through the reflection of the mirror.
